Comparison of training program frameworks

by Amrudesh Santhanam

With the advent of Online courses and an explosion of youtube videos on learning various things, the teacher / trainer is left wondering whether their mode of teaching is effective or is there a better way to do it today with all the tools that are available.

In that context, here is the result of our study on it. We looked at the various methods that are available and compared them for the crucial parameters that matter to the effectiveness, cost and feasibility of training programs. An example for each method is given below. Note that all methods may not be applicable to training in every field. I have chosen teaching of certain engineering concepts as a case in point.

Comparison table:

Method number, Description: Effectiveness and Engagement Effective content deliver rate
(How much content can be taught in unit time?)
Creation Resources Estimated time required (sum of time spent by all people) People required
Method-1: Live Experiment based lecture
Video with voice over
Great Very high Very high Very high (~ 5-10 hours / minute ?) Technical Expert (~10% time)
Technicians (~40% time)
Script writer (~20% time)
Cameraman (~10% time)
Voice over artist (~10% time)
Editor (~10% time)
Method-2: Live Experiment
Video with live audio
Good High High High (~ 2-4 hours / minute ?) Technical Expert (~20% time)
Support staff (~80% time)
Method-3: Animation / Simulation
Video with audio
Good High Fair High (~ 4-6 hours / minute ?) Technical Expert (~20% time)
Script writer (~20% time)
Animator / Simulator (~40% time)
Voice over artist (~10% time)
Editor (~10% time)
Method-4: Whiteboard Hand writing screen capture with live audio Good Average Not much Low (~ 0.5 - 1.0 hour / minute ?) Technical Expert (~80% time)
Support staff (~20% time)
Method-5: White board personal lecture
Video with audio
Ok Poor Not much Very low (~ 0.25 - 0.5 hour / minute ?) Technical Expert (~90% time)
Support staff (~10% time)
Method-6: Interactive presentations with multimedia Very good High Fair High (~ 2-4 hours / minute ?) Technical Expert (~20% time)
Script writer (~20% time)
Animation artist (~40% time)
Voice over artist (~10% time)
Editor (~10% time)
Method-7: PPT
As video with audio
Below average Average Not much Fair (~ 1-2 hours / minute ?) Technical Expert (also, the script writer and voice over artist) (~60% time)
Ameteur software user (~40% time)
Method-8: PPT
(with images and text just like books)
Poor Not Applicable
(since not time limited)
Little Not Applicable
(since not time limited)

I will cover the tools that can be used to create such content in another blog. Hope you were able to get a hang of the various options in front of you. Do comment on the same, and your experience in using any of these.

Cheers :)
